Switching to a toxic free lifestyle has been one of the most positive changes I’ve made for my health and home. Over the years, I’ve learned just how many everyday products contain hidden chemicals that can impact our hormones, skin, and overall well-being. By making simple, intentional swaps, I’ve reduced my exposure to harmful toxins without sacrificing convenience. In this post, I’m sharing the top 10 switches I made for a healthier, more natural way of living—small changes that have made a big difference.
1. Switching to Natural Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softeners
I found that using traditional washing pods and softeners caused gunk and slime to build up in my machine, leaving it smelly and sometimes mouldy. Grey soap scum would stick to the rubber seal, and I noticed it even clung to clothes as I pulled them out.
It’s also surprising how harmful these products are to the environment. Many detergents carry warnings like “harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.” Switching to non-toxic, eco-friendly alternatives has been a game changer for my home and the planet. While some brands can be expensive, I’ve found affordable options that are highly effective. You can read more about the specific products I use in my The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Free Cleaning: Simple DIY Recipes for a Healthier Home.
Additionally, did you know that synthetic fragrances in detergents can disrupt hormones? A study published in the The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) highlights how certain fragrance chemicals act as endocrine disruptors, impacting hormone balance.

2. Using Eco-Friendly Washing-Up Liquid
Switching to a non-toxic dishwashing liquid has been such a simple but effective change in my toxic free lifestyle. I love using the Ecover brand, which is gentle on my hands and leaves my dishes squeaky clean without harsh chemicals.
3. Choosing Non-Toxic Dishwasher Tablets
For my dishwasher, I’ve also switched to the Ecover brand’s basic dishwasher tablets. To increase their effectiveness, I add salt and my own homemade rinse aid. This combination works beautifully and avoids the harsh chemicals found in conventional products. 4. Natural Bathroom Cleaners
Switching to natural bathroom cleaners has made a huge difference to my health. The smell of chemical-laden cleaners used to give me headaches and leave a burning sensation in my nose. Now, I either use homemade cleaning products or the Ecover brand, which has been a reliable go-to for me. I’ve shared more about my favourite products and homemade cleaning solutions in my The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Free Cleaning: Simple DIY Recipes for a Healthier Home, so feel free to check it out!
5. Diffusing Essential Oils Instead of Using Candles
I love my diffusers! They’re incredibly effective at clearing cooking smells and freshening up my home naturally. I enjoy experimenting with different essential oil combinations—lavender in the bedroom for relaxation, lemon or grapefruit to tackle food smells, and basil for a mood boost. Diffusers not only keep my home smelling great but also contribute to a toxic free lifestyle by creating a calming, chemical-free atmosphere that feels so much healthier. I’ve shared a few simple recipes in the blog My Top Household Switches: Trusted Brands and DIY Solutions for a Toxic-Free Home, so be sure to check it out for more inspiration!

6. Switching to Natural Skincare Products
This has been a longer process for me, as I’ve been slowly replacing products as they run out. I now use castor oil for many of my skincare needs, along with products from natural brands I trust. My skin feels healthier and more balanced than ever.

7. Switching to Eco-Friendly Toilet Roll
It might seem odd to think about your toilet roll, but it’s actually one of the easiest places to make a positive switch. Many mainstream brands use bleach, scents, and dyes to make the paper white or fragrant—chemicals that are not only unnecessary but also harmful. As Naked Paper puts it: “How pointless that bleach, scents, and dyes are added to something that’s flushed away.”
I’ve switched to Naked Sprout, a brand that avoids these chemicals and is also eco-friendly. They even offer kitchen roll and tissues, so it’s been a great swap for our household. Look them up here and see what you think!
8. Ditching Plastic Food Storage and Heating Alternatives
When I learned that heating food in plastic containers or cling film can release harmful chemicals into meals, I knew it was time to make a change. Now, I’ve replaced all my plastic storage containers with glass ones. They’re safer, keep food fresher for longer, and are much more sustainable. I also avoid using cling film entirely, opting for reusable silicone covers or beeswax wraps instead. These small changes have made a big impact on how I feel about meal prep and storage, and they’re an easy step towards a toxic free lifestyle.
9. Drinking Filtered Water with a Brita
I’ve replaced bottled water and plastic-heavy systems with a Brita water filter, which comes with a glass jug to minimise contact with plastic. This small change has made my water taste fresher and feels like a healthier, more sustainable choice. It’s also an easy way to reduce exposure to chemicals like chlorine and heavy metals that are commonly found in tap water.

10. Switching to Natural Toothpaste
One of the most impactful changes I’ve made is switching from standard Sensodyne toothpaste to a natural aloe vera-based toothpaste called Aloe Dent. Traditional toothpastes often contain chemicals like SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and artificial flavours, which can irritate gums or disrupt the mouth’s natural balance. Aloe Dent, on the other hand, uses natural ingredients like aloe vera, tea tree oil, and silica, which are gentle yet effective for oral health.
Aloe vera is known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, making it great for reducing gum irritation. Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial benefits, helping to combat plaque buildup and maintain a healthier mouth. Studies, such as one published in the General Dentistry journal, have shown that aloe vera can be as effective as traditional toothpaste in reducing plaque and gingivitis without the harsh chemicals.
Since making this switch, I’ve noticed a massive improvement. My teeth are noticeably whiter, and they’re no longer sensitive—something I’ve struggled with for years. I’ve even been complimented by my dentist on how good my teeth look and how healthy my gums are. It’s a change I wish I’d made sooner!

By gradually swapping out everyday products for cleaner, safer alternatives, you can significantly reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals while improving your overall well-being.
